Streamline Your BigQuery Data Updates with the Powerful SQL MERGE Statement
Introduction to the SQL MERGE statement
The SQL MERGE statement is a powerful tool for data engineering that allows you to combine INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE operations into a single statement. This statement is used to synchronize the data between two tables or to update an existing table with new data. It is also commonly known as UPSERT in other database management systems.
The MERGE statement can be used when you have two tables with similar schema and want to update one table based on the data from the other table. The statement compares the data in the source table with the data in the target table and performs the appropriate operation (INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE) based on the matching criteria.
Using the MERGE statement in BigQuery is similar to using it in other SQL-based database systems. BigQuery has added support for the SQL MERGE statement with the DML (Data Manipulation Language) syntax, which allows you to perform complex updates on BigQuery tables.
Usage
Suppose you have two tables in BigQuery, source_table and target_table. The source_table contains the new data that needs to be merged with the target_table. The target_table contains the old data that needs to be updated or deleted.
