Setting up proxy to access regional blocked website in emergency

What is proxy server?

In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource available from a different server and the proxy server evaluates the request as a way to simplify and control their complexity. Why need proxy server?
A proxy server has a variety of potential purposes, including:

  • To keep machines behind it anonymous, mainly for security.
  • To speed up access to resources (using caching). Web proxies are commonly used to cache web pages from a web server.
  • To prevent downloading the same content multiple times (and save bandwidth).
  • To log / audit usage, e.g. to provide company employee Internet usage reporting.
  • To scan transmitted content for malware before delivery.
  • To scan outbound content, e.g., for data loss prevention.
  • Access enhancement/restriction

So, using manual proxy settings (Proxy server address and port) to a valid proxy server in your browser  can make some regional blocked websites accessible  from your current location/IP.

How to set up?
Here we will add manual proxy to a Firefox web browser in Mac OSX system. First open the “Preferences” (in Mac, Unix) or “Settings” (in Windows) of Firefox:

Then click on “Settings” button under “Network” tab under “Advanced” tab:
Now check the “Manual proxy configuration” option and put a valid proxy server address along with port number on the corresponding fields below the option. Also check the “Use this proxy server for all protocols” check box and finally Press “OK” button:
You can get some lists of free valid proxy servers with other detail on web by googling. I found this address from this site. Restart the Firefox and you done.
It is said that you better use proxy server for just surfing web pages not not for any login, payment method entry, secure data input etc.
